BONUS: Why a Former Chess Champion Thinks Your Leadership Is Stuck in the Opening Game

John Whitt spent 30 years managing billion-dollar construction portfolios in corporate America — sleeping five or six nights a week in hotel beds, traveling the country, winning at someone else’s game. Then he walked away. In this episode, he breaks down what chess taught him about personal and business phases, why generosity outperforms hustle in the long run, and how the “pause factor” keeps leaders from burning out while scaling their impact.

From Corporate Construction to Coaching — The Move That Changed Everything

“I spent 5, sometimes 6 nights a week, sleeping in a hotel bed, traveling around the country, and it really wasn’t good for my sanity, it wasn’t good for my family. And then the company decided to move from Southern California to Dallas, and so that was like the — I’m not going to Dallas move, and it’s time to start something else.”

John’s corporate career was successful by every external measure — managing $500 million construction portfolios at companies like CB Richard Ellis. But the lifestyle was hollowing him out. He’d been thinking about leaving for a while when the relocation to Dallas forced his hand.

Through behavioral assessment work, he discovered coaching was where his strengths naturally pointed — it had been his primary leadership style all along. In 2010, he invested in a Focal Point coaching franchise, which gave him the tools and training without having to reinvent the wheel. Combined with 30 years of corporate relationships, it was enough to launch. His reflection on the transition is simple: “The cool thing about coaching is that we’re just helping people.”

The Chess Game of Business — Opening, Middle, and End

“The way the chess game is played at the higher levels has influenced my way of thinking essentially for the rest of my life. The opening is where you’re getting started — startup business, takes a lot of hustle, a lot of energy. But then the transition happens to the middle game, where you have to think a lot more strategically, and tactically with the right move in the right order, because the wrong order will not get you the results you’re looking for.” Continue reading BONUS: Why a Former Chess Champion Thinks Your Leadership Is Stuck in the Opening Game

BONUS: Rob Gallaher Reveals The Management Revolution Transforming Company Culture and Employee Engagement

In this BONUS episode, we dive deep into the transformative power of profit sharing with Rob Gallaher, CEO of Gallaher Co. Rob shares his journey from an overworked entrepreneur sacrificing family time to building a thriving business model that aligns employee success with company growth. Through practical insights and hard-learned lessons, we explore how monthly profit sharing can revolutionize workplace dynamics and create genuine shared success.

The Genesis of a Profit Sharing Revolution

“I was an entrepreneur, working long hours and sacrificing family time. I realized my situation in life was not so good anymore, and even my health was suffering.”

Rob Gallaher’s journey to profit sharing began with a personal crisis. As a successful entrepreneur, he found himself trapped in the classic founder’s dilemma – working endless hours while his health and family relationships suffered. This realization prompted him to seek alternative business models from other successful owners. His discovery of profit sharing wasn’t immediate magic, but rather a methodical approach to solving the fundamental disconnect between business success and employee engagement. Since implementing it in 2015, Rob has refined his approach through real-world application, leading him to document his learnings in his book after others began noticing the remarkable success of his companies.

Defining True Profit Sharing

“Take the company’s financial success and share it with individuals that make it happen. The main thing: it must be monthly.”

Rob’s definition of profit sharing goes beyond traditional annual bonuses or stock options. His approach centers on taking actual company profits and distributing them to the people who directly contribute to generating those profits. The cornerstone of his system is monthly distribution, recognizing that people manage their personal finances on a monthly basis, not quarterly or annually. This frequency ensures that profit sharing becomes integrated into employees’ monthly budgets and thinking patterns, creating immediate behavioral impact rather than distant, abstract benefits.

The Power of Immediate Impact

“No one manages quarterly their personal life. The profit sharing needs to adapt to that monthly reality. If we don’t affect people’s monthly budget we don’t affect how they think.” Continue reading BONUS: Rob Gallaher Reveals The Management Revolution Transforming Company Culture and Employee Engagement

BONUS: The Power of Handwritten Letters for Leaders With Amy Daughters

In this BONUS episode, we explore the transformative power of handwritten letters with author Amy Daughters. In her book, Dear Dana, Amy shares her remarkable journey of reconnecting with hundreds of people through the lost art of letter writing and reveals how leaders can use this simple yet profound tool to build deeper connections, foster engagement, and create lasting impact in their organizations.

The Genesis of a Letter-Writing Mission

“I was minding my own business, just doing my thing, and I get on Facebook one day in 2014, very innocently, like we all do, and I had a memory of a friend that I’d worked with at a summer camp here in Texas 35 years ago.”

Amy’s journey began with a simple Facebook search for an old camp friend named Dana. After reconnecting online, Amy discovered that Dana’s young son was battling cancer. Initially just following their story from a distance, Amy felt compelled to start sending handwritten letters to Dana and her son during their hospital stays. When Dana’s son tragically passed away at age 15, Amy continued writing to Dana, sending letters to her husband’s law office despite feeling it might be irrational. Five months later, she received a ten-page handwritten response from Dana, sparking a two-year correspondence that changed both of their lives. This powerful connection ultimately inspired Amy to write letters to all 580 of her Facebook friends in a remarkable social experiment that transformed her perspective on human relationships.

The Power of Human Connection

“We were relating to each other as simple human beings. I didn’t know how she voted, she didn’t know how I voted… I didn’t know what her religious views were. I didn’t know what she thought about any kind of social issues.”

What began as a simple act of kindness evolved into a profound lesson in human connection. Amy describes how her letter-writing created a unique space where people could connect authentically without the filters and divisions of social media or modern digital communication. The letters fostered relationships based purely on shared humanity rather than political views, religious beliefs, or social stances. This experiment changed Amy herself as much as it impacted recipients, giving her a deeper appreciation for the unique individuals in her life and helping her see beyond labels to the person beneath. For leaders, this highlights how communication tools that prioritize personal connection can transcend workplace divisions and build genuine relationships.

Creating Lasting Impact with Handwritten Notes

“When someone receives a handwritten item from you, I’m going to immediately realize that you took the time and the effort. And the higher up on the food chain you are, it’s even better to do this for me.” Continue reading BONUS: The Power of Handwritten Letters for Leaders With Amy Daughters
