AI Assisted Coding: The Five Levels of AI-Augmented Coding—From Prompter to Orchestrator

What separates vibe coding from truly effective AI-assisted development? In this episode, Adam Bilišič shares his framework for mastering AI-augmented coding, walking through five distinct levels that take developers from basic prompting to building autonomous multi-agent systems.

Vibe Coding vs AI-Augmented Coding: A Critical Distinction

“The person who is actually creating the app doesn’t have to have in-depth overview or understanding of how the app works in the background. They’re essentially a manual tester of their own application, but they don’t know how the data structure is, what are the best practices, or the security aspects.”

Adam draws a clear line between vibe coding and AI-augmented coding. Vibe coding allows non-developers to create functional applications without understanding the underlying architecture—useful for product owners to create visual prototypes or help clients visualize their ideas.

AI-augmented coding, however, is what professional software engineers need to master: using AI tools while maintaining full understanding of the system’s architecture, security implications, and best practices. The key difference is that augmented coding lets you delegate repetitive work while retaining deep knowledge of what’s happening under the hood.

From Building Features to Building Systems

“When you start building systems, instead of thinking ‘how can I solve this feature,’ you are thinking ‘how can I create either a skill, command, sub-agent, or other things which these tools offer, to then do this thing consistently again and again without repetition.'” Continue reading AI Assisted Coding: The Five Levels of AI-Augmented Coding—From Prompter to Orchestrator

Darryl Wright: Why AI Adoption Will Fail Just Like Agile Did—Unless We Change

“People are looking to AI to solve their problems, and they’re doing it in the same way that they previously looked to Agile to solve their problems for them. The problem with that is, of course, that Agile doesn’t solve problems for you. What it does is it shines a light on where your problems are.” – Darryl Wright

The world has gone AI crazy, and Darryl sees history repeating itself in troubling ways. Organizations are rushing to adopt AI with the same magical thinking they once applied to Agile—believing that simply implementing the tool will solve their fundamental problems. But just as Agile reveals problems rather than solving them, AI will do the same. Worse, AI threatens to accelerate existing problems: if you have too many things moving at once, AI won’t fix that, it will amplify the chaos. If you automate a bad process, you’ve simply locked in badness at higher speed.

As Darryl points out, when organizations don’t understand that AI requires them to still do the hard work of problem-solving, they’re setting themselves up for disillusionment, and in five or twenty years, we’ll hear “AI is dead” just like we now hear “Agile is dead.”

The challenge for Scrum Masters and Agile coaches is profound: how do you help people with something they don’t know they need? The answer lies in returning to first principles. Before adopting any tool—whether Agile or AI—organizations must clearly define the problem they’re trying to solve.

Value stream mapping becomes essential, allowing teams to visualize where humans and AI should operate, with clear handovers and explicit policies. The cognitive load on software teams will increase dramatically as AI generates more code, more options, and more complexity.

Without clear thinking about problems and deliberate design of systems, AI adoption will follow the same disappointing trajectory as many Agile adoptions—lots of activity, little improvement, and eventually, blame directed at the tool rather than the system.

Self-reflection Question: Are you adopting AI to solve a clearly defined problem, or because everyone else is doing it? If you automated your current process with AI, would you be locking in excellence or just accelerating dysfunction?

Global Agile Summit Preview: Implementing Agile Practices for Data and Analytics Teams with Henrik Reich

In this BONUS Global Agile Summit preview episode, we dive into the world of Agile methodologies specifically tailored for data and analytics teams. Henrik Reich, Principal Architect at twoday Data & AI Denmark, shares his expertise on how data teams can adapt Agile principles to their unique needs, the challenges they face, and practical tips for successful implementation.

The Evolution of Data Teams

“Data and analytics work is moving more and more to be like software development.”

The landscape of data work is rapidly changing. Henrik explains how data teams are increasingly adopting software development practices, yet there remains a significant knowledge gap in effectively using certain tools. This transition creates both opportunities and challenges for organizations looking to implement Agile methodologies in their data teams. Henrik emphasizes that as data projects become more complex, the need for structured yet flexible approaches becomes critical.

Dynamic Teams in the Data and Analytics World

“When we do sprint planning, we have to assess who is available. Not always the same people are available.”

Henrik introduces the concept of “dynamic teams,” particularly relevant in consulting environments. Unlike traditional Agile teams with consistent membership, data teams often work with fluctuating resources. This requires a unique approach to sprint planning and task assignment. Henrik describes how this dynamic structure affects team coordination, knowledge sharing, and project continuity, offering practical strategies for maintaining momentum despite changing team composition.

Customizing Agile for Data and Analytics Teams

“In data and analytics, tools have ignored agile practices for a long time.”

CTO Series: Engineering Leadership, Automation, and Trust with Dan Hollinger

In this CTO Series episode, we sit down with Dan Hollinger, an accomplished engineering leader passionate about fostering empathy, transparency, and trust in tech teams. Dan shares pivotal lessons from his career, from building scalable automation systems to navigating complex leadership challenges. We cover key strategies for aligning tech initiatives with business goals, fostering collaboration, and ensuring long-term technical health.

Defining Leadership Through Automation and Empowerment

“Enable your humans to focus on the interesting work—automation should take care of the rest.”

Dan recounts his transformative experience at CCP Games, makers of EVE Online, where a robust test automation system changed his perspective on scaling technical processes. This role introduced him to the power of automation in freeing up engineers to focus on more exploratory and impactful tasks. He emphasizes how empowering self-directed teams with high-level vision statements enables creativity and innovation.

Building Self-Correcting Processes

“Always retro your processes—don’t let them run on autopilot.”

Dan explains the importance of self-correcting processes, using the SEV (Side Event) system as an example. He highlights how retrospectives can improve response times and prevent future crises. For Dan, consistent reviews are the key to maintaining agile, resilient systems that adapt to evolving needs.
